Torch

I saw you just the other day and I couldn’t help but smile
You were never much for fashion, but I’ve always loved your style
Your every movement purposed, with economy and grace
It took my breath away

Thru the years you’ve been a friend to me, since you offered me that hand
But sometimes I have to wonder if you really understand
I have built my life around you, to be close to where you are
But I realize your world revolves around another star

The flame of love’s a dangerous thing, it’ll move you where it will
And it’s been burning me for years, yet even still…

I know I could be a hero if I knew that you believed in me
I would change myself to fit you, but she’s the only one you see
And I’ve held this torch for far too long, hoping that your heart would turn
But I’ll be left here standing in the ashes when there’s nothing left to burn.

So I’ll shape my body, hone my mind, be the best that I can be
In the hope that all these changes might lead you to notice me
But the one that I’m competing with has already won the game
And no matter what I lose of me, the result will be the same

The flame of love’s a dangerous thing, it’ll move you where it will
And it’s been burning me for years, but even still…

I know I could be a hero if I knew that you believed in me
I would change myself to fit you, but she’s the only one you see
And I’ve held this torch for far too long, hoping that your heart would turn
But I’ll be left here standing in the ashes when there’s nothing left…

(BRIDGE:)

So what should I do? Who should I be?
Is there someone out there who will wait for me?
You’re all that I want, but I’m not what you need
And as long as I hold this flame, I can’t be free…

So, can I be a hero? Can you tell me you believe in me?
I know I can never fit you, ’cause she’s the only one you need
And I’m setting down this torch and hoping that my heart will turn
So I won’t be left here standing in the ashes…

I know I could be a hero if I knew that you believed in me
I would change myself to fit you, but she’s the only one you see
And I’ve held this torch for far too long, hoping that your heart would turn
But I’ll be left here standing in the ashes when there’s nothing left to burn.
